Sam Wrighton | Senior Infrastructure Architect
I am a Senior Infrastructure Architect specialising in bridging the gap between complex technical environments and core business goals. With over two decades of experience spanning direct engineering to strategic enterprise architecture, I help organisations design, implement, and govern resilient, scalable, and highly secure infrastructure solutions. My focus is on translating abstract business requirements into tangible IT delivery, ensuring that every piece of architecture provides measurable commercial value.
Throughout my career, I have specialised in designing infrastructure for high-stakes, mission-critical environments where security, compliance, and resilience are non-negotiable. I frequently work within highly regulated sectors, providing technical leadership for strict-compliance infrastructure. This includes acting as the Lead Architect for major enterprise engineering platforms, scoping commercial Statements of Work for nationwide network upgrades, and designing air-gapped solutions that bridge core data centres with operational technology (OT) environments.
My background is heavily rooted in Critical National Infrastructure (CNI). I have directed the architectural pipeline for major UK transport and rail networks, providing infrastructure design and governance for mission-critical SCADA systems and national modernisation programs. Alongside this, my experience covers architecting massive-scale Software-Defined Data Centres (SDDC) and governing fast-changing virtual environments with over 2,000 workloads. Managing this highly dynamic test and development platform required deep performance tuning and creating flexible security solutions for short-lived systems that were constantly being built and destroyed.
The Architecture Diagram Playbook
My approach to architecture is built on targeted communication and strict governance. I utilise TOGAF principles alongside my own Architecture Diagram Playbook—hosted here on Infra Pilot—to design infrastructure blueprints that align technical delivery with executive vision. This structured approach ensures the financial sponsor, the project manager, and the deployment engineer all have the exact contextual artifacts they need to execute flawlessly.
Standards & Governance
As a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET) and an active candidate for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, I am committed to rigorous design standards. My foundational experience as a CVRT Crewman in the British Army instilled a deep appreciation for operational resilience, rigorous discipline, and security fundamentals—principles I carry into every architectural design.
I am accustomed to leading within complex, compliance-driven environments, bringing a deep understanding of cybersecurity risk, IP networking, and enterprise scale. Beyond the technology, I hold an IOSH Managing Safely certification and maintain a strong understanding of CDM Regulations 2015, allowing me to integrate health, safety, and risk management protocols directly into engineering delivery.
I built Infra Pilot to share my architectural frameworks and connect with the broader enterprise IT community. If you find the Architecture Diagram Playbook useful, or if you simply want to talk about complex infrastructure design and governance, I would be glad to connect.
